The 2008 - 2009 school year

marked the 5th year of RAIN’s scholarship program.

In 2004 RAIN was chosen by USAID to be one of 42 partners in 13 African countries to support schoolgirls through the Ambassadors’ Girls’ Scholarship Program.  Through AGSP, RAIN offers scholarships, books and tutoring to needy girls. At the core of AGSP  program is the notion of community women tutoring girls to help them stay in school.

The USAID program has come to an end for RAIN. However, the program will continue and expand with help from the Newman's Own Foundation and our individual donors.

RAIN's quandary -- we have almost no literate women in our nomadic communities. How could we tutor girls?  By replacing tutors with mentors. Our mentors encourage girls to stay in school by sharing their life stories with them, they advocate for them with teachers and parents and teach them practical skills such as knitting, leather and straw crafts.

In 2008 we were pleased to receive permission to add 60 boys to our scholarship program, as well as male mentors. We now support and encourage over 200 scholarship students through the AGSP program.

Parents Love to see Their Children Learning Practical Skills

In addition to encouraging children to stay in school and helping them to succeed, RAIN mentors teach practical skills such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, metalworking.

"RAIN’s mentoring program is very strong, and is being implemented with great regularity.  The commitment of the mentors, who sometimes walk up to seven kilometers to meet with the girls, is remarkable... The program’s focus on traditional skills is also noteworthy, as this seems to very much capture the interest and attention of the girls."
